Have you ever wondered about the symbolism of the world’s diverse faith traditions? For example, have you ever pondered the meaning of the Sufi winged heart inspired by Rumi, or the early expressions of the Christian Cross, or the variations of the Buddhist 8-Spoked Dharma Wheel. These symbols are evolving representations that have stood in for deep concepts of faith since ancient times.
This Sunday we welcome Guest Speaker Susie Weller. Susie and her husband Mark made a recent trip to the cradle of civilization where she visited the countries of Malta, Egypt, Greece, Jordan, and Turkey. In her lesson, she will point out common threads between the various religions which emerged and flourished in the eastern Mediterranean. For example, there is a connection between the practices of the Whirling Dervishes in the Sufi sect of Islam and the Mother Mary in Christendom. Understanding these common links will help you understand how our ancient traditions and beliefs intertwine. Knowing these truths makes it possible to extend understanding and compassion to the members of other faith traditions around the world.
Join Susie Weller this Sunday for a lesson about being inspired by ancient symbols to become a bridge builder. Join her again at 12 pm (after the Friendship Sunday Potluck) for an extended travelogue about her 9-week adventure.
Our featured singer is Michael Robinson. He will be accompanied by LeeAnn Aerlyn-Moore, Jim Turner and Dagan Williamson.
