Part of living and evolving as a spiritual being having a human experience is the process of atonement. Atonement is facing and admitting your mistakes. Without atonement, misdeeds become a poison. The remedy is doing a moral inventory and admitting your trespasses. In this way, you release the power your transgressions hold over you. In other words, you cannot heal what you do not acknowledge. That is the power of confession. Fr. Rohr writes: “God does not love us IF we change; God loves us so that we CAN change. . . Shame for our actions is replaced by a sense of response-ability. We move from powerlessness to strength. It’s no surprise that almost two thirds of Jesus’ teaching is directly, or indirectly, about compassion and forgiveness.” Therefore, confessing to the exact nature of your wrongdoing to another frees your spirit and heals your soul.
October 24 is week three of our seven week Fall SpiritGroup Series based on the Book Breathing Under Water by Father Richard Rohr. Lesson three is about the transforming power of telling the truth to yourself and another about your transgressions.
