In the Book of Genesis, a narrative of Abram (who we call Abraham) is told, in which he puts down an uprising in Canaan. Canaan is a region that roughly corresponds to present-day Israel and the Palestinian Territories, along with western Jordan, southern and coastal Syria, and Lebanon. Following one of his last conquests, a priest-king named Melchizedek approaches Abram to thank him and give him an honored blessing. Before this biblical passage, in Genesis 14:18–20, there is no mention of Melchizedek, and after these three short verses, he disappears from the scene. He is not mentioned again in the Bible for a thousand years and then it is just a single short phrase in Psalms 110:4.

Yet, almost unexplainably, this tiniest of interactions shaped the way you experience the Spirit of God, much more than you realize. Although you may not know his name, Melchizedek embodies the Divine Spirit in a unique way that still whispers to you today. It teaches, leads, and inches you closer to perfection.

Join Reverend Dennis Ashley this Sunday for a lesson that brings to life the power of Melchizedek.
