In 431 BCE, the ancient Greek city-state of Sparta wavered in attacking its fellow city-state of Athens in what became known as the Peloponnesian War. Before going to battle, the Spartan generals petitioned the high priestess at the Temple of Delphi. The question they presented was, “If we declare war against Athens, will the gods be there?” The response from the Oracle was, “The gods will absolutely be there, but you cannot know their form or their purpose.” Put another way, God will be there, but you will not recognize God’s form or function. In the case of the Spartans, this could have meant that God’s presence and power might have favored the Athenians.
This ancient conflict took place over 2500 years ago. Yet, the lesson offered by this narrative still holds true. If you are like most people, you are blind to the infinite ways that God appears to you, and oblivious to the various lessons God is presenting to you. The point is that whether you believe in God or not, or whether you think God is present or not, God is always with you.
Join Reverend Dennis Ashley this Sunday for a lesson about how God is present and moving in your life at all times in all ways.
