Maya Angelou said, “You are only free when you realize you belong no place—you belong every place—no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.” With that quote, she invites you to consider a truth both liberating and paradoxical—that your deepest freedom comes when you release the need to fit in and instead embrace your belonging everywhere and nowhere all at once.
The word belong comes from a root that means to be properly related to, to be connected with, or to have a rightful place. This talk invites you to reflect on your experience of belonging, how it has shown up throughout your life and how it continues to evolve.
You’ll be encouraged to explore the ways you belong:
Your experience of belonging carries longings that are holy. These longings may sometimes create the illusion that you are separate or being excluded. But when you hold them in loving awareness, they guide you back to the truth—you already belong to yourself, to each other, and to the world around you.
You’ll also receive practical tools to help remind you of the simple but profound truth:
You belong here.
Just as you are.
Just because you are.
